George Russell believes his difficult run of results and performances is likely to continue over the coming races unless he and the team can identify the root cause of the issues and find a solution that allows him to regain confidence and consistency behind the wheel. While teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli celebrated yet another pole position this season, the British driver endured another frustrating afternoon, qualifying only sixth at a circuit where Saturday's result is often decisive. As a result, Russell now finds himself effectively out of contention for victory and facing an uphill battle even to challenge for a podium finish, barring any major twists during the race.
Russell expects difficult run to continue after Monaco woes
Speaking to GPblog among other media after qualifying, Russell admitted he is still searching for answers to the issues that have hampered his performances in recent weekends. The Briton revealed that everything initially felt normal during the opening stages of FP3, when he was among the fastest drivers on track, but said the feeling disappeared as the weekend progressed and has yet to return.
"When I went out in FP3 on my first lap, I was four attempts ahead of everybody. And everything felt back to normal. And then from there on in, it's just not been the same. I really don't have an answer right now. And until I can make some adaptation or adjustments, it's going to continue like this."
Russell acknowledged that he has some theories about the root cause of the problem, but stressed that his long-established driving style is no longer delivering the results it once did with the current generation of cars. He even pointed out that Antonelli experienced similar difficulties when attempting to drive last year's
Mercedes in a comparable manner, suggesting the issue may be linked to the characteristics of the car rather than the drivers themselves.
"I've got some ideas why it is, but as I said, I've been driving this manner my whole career, and now for whatever reason it's not working with this car. Last year's car, Kimi was trying to drive it my way, and it was also not working for him. So it's no excuse, it's just a reality, and I need to either work with the team to adjust my driving to compensate these new tyres, these new cars, or I need to find a different setup that works for me, but it's not clicking right now."
Verstappen ruthless toward Russell: 'He'll be scratching his head for a bit'
Asked about Antonelli's performance after qualifying, Verstappen was full of praise for the young Italian, stating that the championship leader is delivering exactly what is required and continuing to perform at a very high level.
The Dutchman also drew a comparison with
Russell's struggles on the other side of the Mercedes garage, suggesting the Briton is likely searching for answers as Antonelli continues to extract strong results from the same machinery.
