Kim Antonelli showed his most sporting side in Barcelona. While the Italian must have been deeply disappointed after his retirement, he found his way to the pit lane to congratulate Lewis Hamilton on his first victory for Ferrari. It was a heartbreaking moment for Kimi Antonelli during the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona-Catalunya. The Italian had finally passed teammate George Russell for second place and seemed set to make a major stride in the world championship. Just after the decisive overtaking move, however, Antonelli ground to a halt
due to an engine problem. After five wins in a row, it was a return to earth for Antonelli. Where Russell retired in Canada, it was now the turn of the championship leader. Just minutes after that mental blow, however, Antonelli appeared to have quickly recovered to deliver a moment of great class.
Whereas many drivers would head straight to hospitality with their helmets on, Antonelli was dropped off in the pit lane. There, Mercedes’ young star waited for Hamilton to congratulate him on his first win for Ferrari. A beautiful gesture from the championship leader, right after such a frustrating moment in his season.
