The absence of Red Bull's chief engineer for car engineering, Paul Monaghan, did not go unnoticed in the Silverstone paddock, with the British engineer recently being linked with a move away from the Milton Keynes-based team. As
GPblog reported during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, Monaghan, long regarded as one of Christian Horner's closest and most loyal allies, is open to a move to Cadillac, where he could take on a senior technical role. Red Bull, however, is keen to retain the experienced British engineer and is understood to
have offered him improved financial terms along with a long-term contract in an effort to convince him to stay.
Adding further intrigue to the situation, Sky Sports reporter Ted Kravitz noted that it is highly unusual for Monaghan to miss a race weekend. While Laurent Mekies declined to confirm whether the veteran engineer was set to leave, Kravitz said Red Bull's position was that Monaghan is simply taking the weekend off.
However, the Sky Sports reporter added that there is a strong belief throughout the paddock that the Brit was on his way to another team (Cadillac), a move that would mark yet another high-profile technical departure from the Milton Keynes-based outfit.
“I’ve wandered to Red Bull Racing, where I am missing one of their top engineering brains, one Paul Monaghan, who is not here this weekend. There have been rumours… it was brought up at the last race what Paul Monaghan is doing and whether he is leaving. “Laurent Mekies wouldn’t confirm either way, but it’s very unusual for Monaghan to miss a race. The team, we believe, are saying that he’s just having a race off, but we also understand that he’s on his way to a different team. The strong belief in the paddock is that he’s on his way to a different team. So, the departure of top engineering brains at Red Bull continue.”
