Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov won the Formula 2 Sprint Race at Silverstone and took the lead in the drivers' standings as well. Gabriele Mini finished in second place, and Rafael Villagomez completed the podium today. Thanks to this result, Tsolov is now the Formula 2 championship leader. The gap could not be any smaller, as Mini is level on points with him. On 4th July, Cadillac's Colton Herta was unable to score points. The former IndyCar driver finished in 16th place this Saturday.
As it happened - The Formula 2 Sprint Race at the British Grand Prix
The championship leader entering the Sprint, Mini, started the race from pole position and kept the lead. However, his rival for the Formula 2 title, Tsolov, also got off to a superb start, gained three positions off the line and got up to third place.
On Lap 2, the Safety Car was immediately deployed after an incident involving Sebastian Montoya and John Bennett, as both drivers went wide into the gravel exiting the final corner. The Briton spun back onto the track, where his car stalled next to the start-finish line.
The Sprint resumed on Lap 7. Mini held on to the lead, while Tsolov began to put Villagomez under pressure. A lap later, into Stowe, the Bulgarian talent made his move stick and moved up to second place.
By Lap 15, Tsolov was less than a second behind Mini. A lap later, the Red Bull junior made his first attempt to take the lead, but his Italian rival closed the door on him. During the closing laps, Tsolov once again tried to make a move stick into Stowe but was unsuccessful. However, on the final lap, Mini made a mistake, allowing Tsolov to capitalize and take victory today.
