Ferrari had hoped to team up with
Red Bull Racing to fight for the world title this season, but for now the Italian team has been fighting mainly against itself. It would not surprise
David Coulthard if this also creates pressure from within, he told
Channel 4.
While
Charles Leclerc and
Carlos Sainz have not made a strong impression in recent races,
Ferrari's actions have also been criticised. In Hungary Ferrari caused a surprise by bringing the Monegasque in for a tyre change. Not only was the choice of tyres not a happy one, it was also too late.
Coulthard thinks that both drivers will find it more difficult to fully believe Ferrari when it comes to strategy. According to him, Ferrari therefore need to change something quickly to get Leclerc and Sainz behind them again. "They must be losing the confidence," Coulthard said.
Ferrari expected to stay ahead of Mercedes
However, the former Formula One driver does not think Mercedes will beat them in the rankings. "I don’t think they are there putting pressure on Ferrari, Ferrari have got a quick race car, they’ve done the hard work, I think the spotlight is very much on the strategy decisions that are made."
