Oscar Piastri received a ten-second time penalty in Silverstone. He then requested his team to switch positions with teammate Lando Norris. Giedo van der Garde almost fell off his chair in surprise because of this request.
“How can you ask that?”, started Giedo van der Garde in surprise on Viaplay.
Oscar Piastri was given a ten-second time penalty during the British Grand Prix for braking too hard the safety car. The FIA document details how many km/h the Australian drastically slowed down by.
After serving said penalty in the last round of pitstops, then Aussie re-joined the track behind teammate Norris, and then asked the team if they could switch positions, a request the team paid no heed to.

Van der Garde cannot comprehend Piastri's request

The former F1 driver could not fathom how one could make such a request. “He made that mistake himself. Actually, it was just a really stupid mistake. He just threw away his victory today. Then you can't be asking that from the team! How does that make sense?”
“You can try,” Christijan Albers supported the Australian.
“But if you are the team boss, then you say, 'Of course not, we're not doing that. Have you lost your mind or what?’”, Van der Garde still couldn't understand that reasoning.
Albers then tried to explain the situation from Piastri's point of view. “He was very convinced that just as the lights went out, that's when he braked. And that is allowed. If the lights are still on then that is not allowed, I believe, off the top of my head.”
For the incident, aside from the ten-second penalty, Piastri was also handed two penalty points on his license. According to the Australian driver, his 'deserved result, was taken away by the bad penalty call.'
