Sergio Perez once again highlighted how the circumstances at Red Bull Racing affected his performances before he was let go by the Austrian team at the end of the 2024 season. So far in the 2026 season, Perez has outperformed teammate Valtteri Bottas at
Cadillac. Speaking to
GPblog, among others, the Mexican reiterated that he never lost his form at Red Bull Racing, insisting that
the circumstances were behind his struggles.
He began: "I wasn't able to show my full potential, because of very different circumstances in the last six months of Red Bull, of course. There were a lot of circumstances behind it."
Perez continued: "So I think people thought that I'm overdelivering at the moment, but I think I was driving already at a very high level earlier, given the circumstances I was in. And I think there's no difference with this new generation of cars.
"I think I'm really happy with the level of at the moment, with my pace, I think I'm really, really happy and I seem to be getting better and better. And yeah, I just have to keep performing. That's the only thing that matters to me at the moment."
Perez uses Red Bull Racing experience to help Cadillac move forward
As one of the most experienced drivers on the grid, Perez plays a key role in
Formula 1's newest team's project. The Mexican also drew valuable lessons from his time at Red Bull Racing, where the team was fighting for championships.
"[Red Bull is an] experienced team, it's obviously very established. They know where to find performance, where to look for it, and at the moment for us everything is new. The cost cap has been obviously very challenging as well, similar to all the other teams. So, yeah, we are not in an easy situation, I'd say."
He added: "Obviously, I give direction, I give a lot of information, but we also have very experienced people in the team, people that have done it for many years.
"As a driver, you push in directions of what we need, what we're lacking and so on. Also, it's up to the team to be able to come up with those solutions, which everyone is trying to get."
