Esteban Ocon has responded to recent speculation suggesting his Formula 1 seat at Haas could already be under threat for 2027 - or even before the end of the current season. Speaking recently on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher cast serious doubt
over Ocon’s future on the grid, claiming the Frenchman has failed to impress enough alongside Bearman during the current season. According to Schumacher, Ocon has too often struggled to match his younger teammate’s performances, making it difficult to justify keeping him beyond the near future.
The German believes the situation has already become critical for the Haas driver, to the point where he expects Ocon to lose his seat either at the end of the current campaign or potentially even earlier if the American team decides to act before 2026. Schumacher also suggested Haas could already be evaluating replacement options behind the scenes should the disappointing trend continue over the coming races.
“One thing is clear: Ocon is not good enough. At best he’s equal to Bearman, and most of the time he’s worse. I can’t imagine we’ll still see Ocon next year. That’s as good as certain, unless a team has a big problem. It’s not out of the question that they (Haas, ed.) will already start looking for someone else this season.”
Ocon brands Haas future rumours ‘complete bullsh*t'
Speaking with GPblog among other media, the Frenchman firmly dismissed the rumours surrounding his future, describing the recent reports as completely fabricated and accusing sections of the media of spreading nonsense.
“Honestly, complete bull***t., to be honest. It's unbelievable. I mean, we were just talking with Ayao just now. The article I saw was calling him Ryo Komatsu, which is quite funny. And they were even saying that we had a massive dispute in Miami. It's complete nonsense. Honestly, it's all fabricated and complete bull***t.
“As I said, I came to this team for the reason that I know Ayao since so long. I got a great relationship with him. That's always been the case. There's nothing like what people have been saying going on. It's completely not true. I'm fully focused on what I have to do, the job I have to do with the team. You know, I'm fully on board with the team for the whole year.
“I got a contract with the team. I will tell you more later, but honestly, it's crazy how things have escalated. And honestly, I try not to pay attention too much, but when it gets so big, it's almost like bullying in a way. I feel good. I feel relaxed in the team. We're doing a great job in the last couple of races. It's been unfortunately a bit in the beginning, as we know with safety cars and stuff. The pace and the base foundation of the work that we are doing is there. So it's nothing wrong going on.”
Shifting the focus to the future and the possibility of remaining with the team next season as well, Ocon insisted there is currently no tension or internal issue within Haas, dismissing suggestions of disputes as entirely fabricated.
“At the moment, we're only four races in. All these chats, they happen in summer, they always do. So at the moment we're just focusing on what we have to do and then we'll see about the future later. There's no emergency or dispute or we don't talk with Ayao or the team. It's all been fabricated, so it's unbelievable, honestly.”
Asked whether stories like these can still become a source of distraction even for an experienced driver like himself, Ocon finally added: “At the end of the day, I try not to pay attention to that too much, but that became so big for no reason that I had to get a bit involved into it. We had to have a look and understand where that could have come from. But as soon as we talked to the real people that are involved with the story, it's quite clear that it's complete bullsh*t, so you are obviously much more fine when the story is very clear inside.”
