Former F1 driver and FIA steward Johnny Herbert believes Max Verstappen is simply ‘playing games’ and has no genuine intention of actually leaving Formula 1. Since the start of the season, the Dutchman has expressed significant frustration over the new regulations and the style of racing produced by the latest generation of cars, with the FIA eventually stepping in ahead of the Miami GP by introducing
a series of adjustments aimed at improving both safety and on-track racing. Among the key priorities was tackling the widely discussed super-clipping phenomenon that dominated conversations between Australia and Japan.
Herbert believes Verstappen is ‘playing’ with Formula 1 and the FIA
Speaking to a betting site, Herbert suggested Verstappen’s recent comments about potentially leaving Formula 1 should not be taken entirely at face value. The Brit believes Verstappen is effectively using his status within the sport to send a message that Formula 1 risks losing one of its biggest stars if the racing product moves too far away from what drivers actually want.
“He’s playing a game and I totally understand that. He’s playing with the teams, playing with Formula 1, the FIA, saying I'm leaving because the cars are not what I want the cars to be. That’s why it's important if someone like Lewis or Max was on a committee being part of the decision-making process, I think the drivers would have a very positive impact on what happens down the line. Max and all the drivers want a car that tests them. Cars at the moment don’t test them and that’s why they are frustrated.”

Herbert also argued that Verstappen is ultimately very unlikely to walk away from Formula 1 for real, insisting the sport still offers the fastest and most exciting cars any driver can experience. In his view, F1 remains the pinnacle of motorsport in terms of pure driving thrill, while the recent adjustments aimed at improving the behaviour of the cars could gradually move the championship closer to a style of racing more suited to Verstappen’s preferences, potentially putting the Dutchman in a far more positive frame of mind moving forward.
“You're never going to walk away from this sport because they are still the very best race cars out there. It's still probably the biggest thrill you're going to get out of driving. We're getting much closer to having a normal race car, which means Max will be in a better mindset.”
Coulthard convinced 'Verstappen is staying with Red Bull for the rest of his career'
The Brit believes the recent rumours linking Max Verstappen with a potential Red Bull exit are
unlikely to become reality, with the former Formula 1 driver convinced the Dutchman has found the perfect environment for both his personality and driving style within the Milton Keynes-based team.
Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard explained that Red Bull’s internal culture differs significantly from that of rivals such as Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren. While other top teams often place their drivers within more rigid structures, he argued that Red Bull has instead built a system that allows Verstappen to fully express himself without restrictions, something he considers crucial to the Dutchman’s success.
Coulthard also suggested that this philosophy dates back to the vision of Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, whose approach was always centred around letting individuals remain authentic rather than forcing them into a corporate mould. Verstappen, in his view, represents the clearest example of that mentality today, which is why Coulthard struggles to imagine him ever feeling truly comfortable elsewhere.
“In my mind Max will not be going anywhere, because there's no other Formula One team that would allow him to be Max. McLaren wouldn't be able to do it, Ferrari wouldn't be able to do it, Mercedes wouldn't be able to do it, despite the fact he was driving a Mercedes, just because of the investment that goes into the individual driver, but Red Bull do.”
