Norris claims first pole of the season as Hamilton and Antonelli hit with costly penalties

The reigning world champion claimed his first pole position of the season with a superb final lap around the Hungaroring, edging Hamilton by just 0.012s in one of the closest qualifying sessions of the year. Charles Leclerc secured third for Ferrari, while Kimi Antonelli impressed with fourth after another strong performance for Mercedes. Oscar Piastri completed the top five, with Max Verstappen only sixth following a spin at the final corner on his last flying lap.

Further down the order, George Russell had to settle for seventh after abandoning his final attempt when Verstappen's spin brought out yellow flags, while Isack Hadjar qualified eighth. Arvid Lindblad continued his encouraging form by taking ninth, with Nico Hulkenberg rounding out the top 10 after another solid display for Audi.

Although Hamilton and Antonelli initially finished qualifying in second and fourth respectively, those positions did not remain unchanged after the session concluded.

Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli have both been handed three-place grid penalties following qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, although the two sanctions stem from separate incidents. Hamilton was penalised for impeding Oscar Piastri during Q3 after the Ferrari driver remained on the racing line through Turn 1 as the Australian began his final flying lap.

Antonelli, meanwhile, was found to have breached the regulations by failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags after Max Verstappen's spin at the final corner during the closing moments of qualifying.

The penalties significantly reshape the front of the grid. Hamilton, who had originally qualified second, will now start fifth, while Antonelli drops from fourth to seventh. As a result, Charles Leclerc is promoted to second alongside polesitter Norris, with Piastri moving up to third. Max Verstappen also gains two positions despite qualifying only sixth and will now start from fourth on the grid, sharing the second row with the McLaren driver. Behind them, George Russell moves up one place to sixth following Antonelli's penalty.
