Max Verstappen struggled to deliver a top result at Silverstone, hindered by unpredictable weather conditions. After an unexpected pole position on Saturday, the Dutchman ultimately crossed the line in fifth place. Olav Mol didn’t hold back his criticism of the team during Ziggo Sport’s Race Café. Red Bull seemed to have gone with a dry weather setup at Silverstone. While it helped
Verstappen secure pole position on Saturday, it left him unable to properly challenge during the race.
Mol saw this too and was clear about the team's choice: ‘’Personally, I found Red Bull a bit naive. They know Milton-Keynes, they know Silverstone, we know about the English weather. Horner said on Saturday: ‘It’s a typical British summer’, they now say that they believed there was only a 20 percent chance of rain.’’
Verschoor comes to Red Bull's defense
F2 driver Richard Verschoor also appeared on Race Café, where he defended the
Red Bull Racing team.
Having raced at Silverstone himself, Verschoor noted how the weather conditions were constantly shifting: ‘’We analyzed it all weekend and it really was like that. We also thought, Sunday will just be dry. It was really pouring with us. On the radar, it really looked like it would be dry.’’
Team principal Christian Horner acknowledged that Verstappen did well to salvage fifth place. He pointed to a key moment in the Dutchman’s race — the timing of Red Bull’s pit stops: ''Going from the slick, from the inter to the slick, it seemed to take an age for the track to actually try out.''
''And getting that crossover I think we timed it optimally to get him on the medium tyre for the end of the race.''
