Both McLaren drivers were hit by technical issues shortly before the start of the Chinese Grand Prix, with both Norris and Piastri unable to take part in the race, leaving the team with a costly double zero in the constructors’ standings.
Speaking ahead of the Suzuka weekend, the reigning world champion said: "Alongside HPP, I think it took a little bit of time to figure things out, but of course it hurt us as a team. It certainly didn't make us look good to have two cars not starting a race.

I think what hurt more is the fact it was out of our control, but we're taking it, we've worked hard to figure things out, to understand how it happened, why it happened, and of course, we'll do everything we can to make sure it doesn't happen again.
He finally added: "You live and you learn. It was a tough one for all of us. None of us want to have a weekend like that, and especially start a Sunday like that. So yeah, hurt a lot, but I think at the same time, a good time for us to learn, step back and move onto this weekend."

Leonardo Fornaroli is set to begin his duties as McLaren reserve driver this weekend at Suzuka after a brief delay. The reigning Formula 2 champion will be on standby to step in for Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri if required.
Earlier this week in Barcelona, the 21-year-old had his first experience behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car, driving McLaren’s 2023 challenger. Over the course of the test, he completed 110 laps, covering more than 500 kilometres.
Fornaroli is now heading to Japan to join the team for the Suzuka weekend, where he is expected to be actively involved trackside and ready to race should the opportunity arise.
