A switch to Indycar could be a ‘good step’ for Mick Schumacher but one which would also pose a risk of serious accidents, according to Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko. "That would be too dangerous for me.”
- Helmut Marko on IndycarMarko showed support for a potential Indycar switch but warned that Indycar poses a risk of serious accidents given its high speeds and unfamiliar oval layouts.
Schumacher recently took part in his first Indycar test at Indianapolis with the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team in October. The team already filled their three seats for 2026, so Schumacher will be hoping to find a permanent seat elsewhere on the grid.
A promising move with a risk of 'serious accidents'
Speaking to Sport.de, Marko said: "The series is a good series, it's very competitive."
“[It could be] a good step for the German. He had a very encouraging test there.
“If he feels comfortable in America, learns the oval tricks - and he'll need a few races for that - then it will certainly go well.”
Marko also warned of the risk Schumacher will be taking: “That would be too dangerous for me. At an average speed of up to 340 km/h, there's a risk of serious accidents. In such a case, it's usually a major crash."

Opportunities for a return to
F1 seem few and far between for the 26-year-old German who was dropped by Haas at the end of 2022.
After spending 2023 on the sidelines as a Mercedes reserve driver, Schumacher raced in the World Endurance Championship for Alpine in 2024 and 2025.
Should he secure a seat for 2026, Schumacher would not be the only former F1 driver on the Indycar grid.
He would join former Manor Marussia driver Alexander Rossi and ex-Sauber and Alfa Romeo driver Marcus Ericsson. Both have won the Indy 500 since making the move across the Atlantic.
