Sebastian Vettel has emerged as a potential successor to Helmut Marko. Jonathan Wheatley, who has worked with both, believes that the succession won't be easy. Marko was the first to mention Sebastian Vettel's name as his potential successor. The pair knows each other very well. Just like Max Verstappen,
Vettel was brought to Red Bull at a young age by the Austrian. The relationship has remained very strong even after the four-time world champion left Red Bull.
Wheatley worked as Sporting Director for Red Bull and now leads the Sauber team. He said in the team principal press conference that replacing Marko would be challenging: "Firstly, I think replacing Helmut will be a significant challenge in itself.
"I can't imagine how one person could do that. I haven't seen Sebastian for a while. He is, of course, an impressive individual as you all know.
‘’I believe the talks between the two parties have been confirmed, but whether it really leads to something, I don't know. However, I hope to see Helmut in that role for much longer.’’
Will Vettel Succeed Helmut Marko?
Since leaving Aston Martin at the end of 2022, Vettel has not returned to Formula 1. The German was seen multiple times in the paddock, but mostly for his sustainability projects.
During the press conference ahead of the
Austrian Grand Prix, Verstappen was asked about the news regarding Vettel.
"It's more than natural for someone who has achieved so much with Red Bull, and also grew up within Red Bull, to always have a place, right?" the Dutchman responded.
Verstappen pointed out that the bond between Vettel and the team has always been good. "I also think that Seb has always maintained a very good relationship with Helmut, even after he left." He was not aware of the talks between the two, but he sees the return of the German in any role as logical. "I didn't know they were in discussion, but I'm sure there's always room for Seb, in any form."
