Helmut Marko has backed hometown hero Charles Leclerc for victory at this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, with the Monegasque eager to bounce back after a subdued weekend in Montreal, where it was his teammate who stole the spotlight. The Monegasque is coming off
his third contract extension since joining Ferrari, a deal that will in all likelihood see him become the longest-serving driver in the team's history. More importantly, however, it underlines the clear desire from both sides to continue the journey that began in 2019, despite the long-awaited world championship still remaining out of reach.
Marko identifies Leclerc as the man to beat in Monaco
Speaking to his compatriots at OE24, the Austrian tipped Leclerc as the man to beat in Monaco, backing him as the favourite for pole position. Marko also stressed the importance of qualifying at the Principality, arguing that the driver who starts at the front is usually in the best position to go on and secure victory: "I see Leclerc in front - he's at home there and my favourite in qualifying. And whoever is at the front in Monaco also wins the race."
For much of his
Formula 1 career, success in
Monaco seemed destined to elude Leclerc. Despite often showing the pace to fight at the front on the streets he knows better than anyone, a series of setbacks repeatedly denied him the result he craved most. Mechanical issues, costly circumstances and strategic misfortune all played their part in preventing the Ferrari driver from standing on the top step of the podium in his home race.
That frustrating run finally came to an end in 2024, when Leclerc delivered a flawless weekend to secure an emotional maiden victory in the Principality. The triumph marked one of the defining moments of his career and erased years of disappointment around the iconic circuit. He then backed up that breakthrough with another strong performance the following season, adding a second-place finish to his Monaco record.
Leclerc shares powerful message after new Ferrari contract: 'The dream is still alive!'
Shortly after signing his contract extension, the Monegasque
shared a heartfelt open letter dedicated to Ferrari and its supporters, reflecting on the deep connection he has built with the Scuderia since joining the team. Leclerc described Ferrari as much more than a racing outfit, admitting that driving for the Prancing Horse had been a lifelong dream long before he ever arrived in Formula 1.
Looking back on his time in Maranello, he recalled the many highs and lows experienced over the years, from memorable victories to difficult moments that tested both him and the team. According to Leclerc, it is precisely those shared experiences that have helped strengthen the bond between himself and Ferrari, turning what began as a childhood ambition into something that feels like a second family.
The eight-time Grand Prix winner also underlined the importance of loyalty and trust, explaining that his decision to commit his future to Ferrari was never in doubt. Confident in the team's vision and determined to help bring the Scuderia back to the top of Formula 1, Leclerc reaffirmed his dedication to the project while expressing his gratitude to everyone in Maranello and to the tifosi, whose passion and support have played a key role throughout his journey in red.
