F2 enters a new era with its 2027-2029 challenger

While the 2027 Formula 2 car remains largely based on the current generation introduced in 2024, it features several technical developments. The most significant is the introduction of an on-board starter, made possible by an updated version of the existing Hewland gearbox.

Elsewhere, the car retains the FIA’s 2024 specifications for braking performance, steering effort and cockpit ergonomics, while the Marelli electronic and hydraulic package remains unchanged, including the EM Motorsport Marshalling system.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem described Formula 2 as a crucial platform for developing the next generation of top drivers, highlighting how the 2027 car will improve safety, accessibility and close racing while strengthening the championship’s commitment to sustainability.

He added that the new car, developed alongside Formula 2 and its technical partners, is intended to challenge young drivers and better prepare them for the highest level of competition, while also reinforcing the FIA’s single-seater pathway.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali stressed the importance of Formula 2 in preparing young talents for the step up to Formula 1. He also welcomed the new car’s focus on innovation, safety and closer racing, while retaining equal machinery across the grid to give drivers the opportunity to prove themselves.

Finally, Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel explained that the priority behind the new car was to retain its role as a key preparation tool for Formula 1. Together with the FIA, F2 opted to keep the current chassis while redesigning the front and rear wings, helping to control costs while improving close racing and giving the car a more F1-inspired appearance.

Michel also highlighted the addition of an on-board starter, which will simplify operations for teams and allow drivers to restart after a spin or stall. He added that F2 will continue working with Aramco and Pirelli on driver preparation, sustainability and delivering entertaining and safe racing for fans.
