Charles Leclerc believes Ferrari's race pace will help them considerably in Miami. However, the Monegasque driver once again stressed the need to optimise qualifying, with another session to come at the Miami Grand Prix.
After Ferrari were towards the top of the timesheets on the medium tyres, they struggled once switching to softs in SQ3, with Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finishing fourth and seventh respectively in Miami.
The team introduced an outstanding number of updates for this weekend, 11 in total. Leclerc says the updates are not the issue, adding that he expected the frontrunners with Mercedes power units to be ahead.
He explained to F1 TV after the session: "Upgrades are fine, it's just that it's everybody brought upgrades. We kind of expected that situation where Mercedes is probably still the car to beat. McLaren did a very big step forward, but I felt like they didn't really optimise their first races of the season. So they were always there, but they didn't put everything together."
He continued: "On our side, we have just been today particularly, we've struggled with tyres. Mediums were working very well. On the softs it wasn't a nice feeling, so on that we've got to look at it. We know that in the race pace we are stronger, but in terms of qualifying there's still some work to be done."

Leclerc optimistic about race pace

Looking ahead to the rest of the weekend, the Monegasque driver is positive about Ferrari’s race pace. The question is whether they will be able to overtake. He concluded: "I think in qualifying tomorrow we can try and fine-tune a little bit and find a bit of performance, but I hope that in the race we can come back in the front. We've got the pace to do that. Let's just see if we are able to overtake."
