McLaren CEO Zak Brown has responded to comments made by Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies, with the Frenchman stating that Gianpiero Lambiase will become team principal at the British team. During the five-week hiatus in racing after the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix were cancelled, it was announced that Max Verstappen's race engineer would be leaving the Austrian team and joining McLaren as its Chief Racing Officer by 2028.
As racing resumed at the
Miami Grand Prix, the move was a major talking point, and further speculation arose when Mekies stated that
'GP' is "going to be a team principal at McLaren", prompting Brown to respond to the Red Bull boss’s remarks.
"He knows something I don't, apparently," Brown retorted while speaking to Sky Sports when posed with Mekies' earlier comments.
"I've got a great one; I got the best one in the pit lane, Andrea Stella. So I couldn't be happier with Andrea. My job as CEO is to get the best talent, to think long term and to have the most strength on the pit wall or at the factory and the car, whatever the case may be.
"Andrea has done a fantastic job, our technical team... and GP [Gianpiero Lambiase] is a huge, huge talent. So, when the opportunity presented itself to strengthen our racing team, that's exactly what we're going to do, whether it's a racing driver or an engineer, a strategist, whatever the case may be. I'm very happy he's going to be joining us."
