The New Zealand driver, who returned to the Racing Bulls after commencing the campaign at Red Bull, highlighted how the lack of pre-season testing with the team’s VCARB 02 car has played a part in his adaptation. Lawson also detailed how he has had to do much of this adjustment during race weekends.
"The main problem concerns all those small aspects that make you feel comfortable with the car and that you take care of before the start of the season,” he said via Automoto Italia.
“These elements have to do with the driver's preferences in particular, beyond getting used to the car and getting the most out of it. Unfortunately, I had to do all of this during the race weekends."

Despite his challenging start to the 2025 campaign, Lawson has gradually continued to find his feet and last time out at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, he recorded his best qualifying performance alongside his best career finish at a race weekend.

Liam Lawson on Laurent Mekies’ help

Liam Lawson also touched on how Laurent Mekies was instrumental to his adaptation following his return to the Racing Bulls outfit. The Kiwi native highlighted the support he received from the former Racing Bulls team principal prior to his Red Bull switch.
“Laurent has been a great help to me since the first phone call I had with him, preparing for Japan. He was fantastic with me. And he understands the drivers very well.”
“He establishes a personal relationship with them. He cares a lot, and he worries about everything we go through during the course of a season, even on a personal level. He notices everything, and he takes the time to understand and try to help us.”
Lawson and Mekies worked together at the Racing Bulls outfit for much of the first half of the 2025 campaign until his switch to Red Bull in the lead-up to the Belgian Grand Prix.
