As the drivers took to the track a pecking order seemed to form, with Ferrari and Red Bull fighting over the favourite role, Mercedes in P3 and McLaren nowhere near the top.
Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc flew around the 6.2km temporary street circuit, consistently placing in the top spots, with Yuki Tsunoda even managing to keepupwith Verstappen.
Lewis Hamilton remained at a large distance from his Ferrari teammate - 0.759s behind Leclerc - slotting in P10 as the session drew to a close.
Lando Norris spent most of the first practice session out of the top ten, with his lowest position being P17, as Oscar Piastri also struggled to adapt to the conditions in Las Vegas.
Nevertheless the McLaren drivers would eventually close the gap to the leaders with Norris in P6 leading Piastri in P7, four and half and six and a half tenths adrift of Leclerc's lead respectively.
Tsunoda was able to put in a push lapon the softs that saw him get ahead of teammate Verstappen in the same compound tyre.
Alexander Albon then took his Williams over the line to clinch a surprising P2 in the dying moments of the session.
