Former Renault driver Jolyon Palmer has slammed Romain Grosjean after his latest incident in the Spanish Grand Prix. He suggested that this is his “worst” in a series of incidents
Palmer was test driver under Grosjean whilst the pair were at Lotus. Palmer replaced Grosjean’s seat for FP1’s during the European stint of the 2015 season.
The British driver admitted that Grosjean is experiencing some tough times and will need to recover from this low point.
“Romain Grosjean is going through tough times in Formula 1 and he hit a real low point with his crash on the first lap at the Spanish Grand Prix,” Palmer said in his BBC column.
“I don’t remember an incident like it and I don’t think the stewards did either - which is why they have given him a three-place penalty at Monaco.
“It is the latest - and worst - in a series of difficult moments for Grosjean this year.
“What I couldn’t understand was why he kept his foot planted on the throttle for so long.”
It was this throttle action which created the tyres to spin and produce plenty of smoke to block drivers view. It also launched him back into the middle of the track.
It’s the Frenchman’s 2nd silly looking incident in 2 races. In Baku, he crashed into the walls whilst weaving under the safety car.
In 2012, Grosjean experienced a similar occurrence of events. And for these, he was banned for a race.
Palmer went on to suggest Romain needs to “clear his head and reset” ahead of the challenging Monaco Grand Prix.
