Lewis Hamilton expressed his delight after securing Sprint pole on home soil at Silverstone, with the seven-time world champion set to lead the field away in Saturday's Sprint in front of his home crowd. The Brit
edged out Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011s with his final flying lap in SQ3. He also once again got the better of
Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, who ended up fourth after finishing three tenths off Hamilton's pace and behind Max Verstappen.
Speaking after qualifying, Hamilton admitted that taking Sprint pole at Silverstone meant a great deal to him, describing the circuit as one he loves and calling it a dream to once again deliver in front of the home crowd. He praised the feeling of driving the track when the car is in the right window and thanked both the team at the circuit and everyone back at the factory for their relentless work on bringing updates every weekend.
“I love this place, I love this crowd, and I can’t express to you how big a dream it is, and still to this day, when you’re building up to this race and you think about every corner and the flow you can get into at this track if you get the setup right and if you’ve got the right team behind you.
The seven-time world champion also highlighted just how close the battle had been, pointing out to the tiny gap that separated him from Antonelli, before saying the entire team deserved the result and expressing his gratitude for everyone's efforts.
“The car’s felt great today thanks to everyone back at the factory, just continuing to push. We brought tiny little bits here. Every single weekend we’re showing up with something. Everyone’s pushing to the max. I’m really grateful to get that pole. I was quick through all the session but still, it was only 10 milliseconds, so it was very close to these guys. The team really deserves it, so a big, big thank you to everyone here."
Hamilton finally admitted that beating both a Mercedes and a Red Bull made the result even more satisfying, praising the pace both teams have shown throughout the season and particularly over the Silverstone weekend. He also credited Ferrari for continuing to push hard with development, adding that neither he nor the team had expected to be fighting on the front row heading into the weekend, making the Sprint pole an even bigger surprise.
"We're ahead of a Mercedes and the Red Bull, they have so much power these guys. They've been doing amazing all year, the boys in blue (Mercedes) this weekend, these champs. But my team won't let up, they'll keep pushing, and that's what I'm so proud of. It won't always be like this, but we didn't expect coming to Silverstone that we'd be competing for the front row, we really, really didn't. So, this is an amazing surprise. I'm ecstatic."
