Lewis Hamilton has suggested that he sees shade of himself in Kimi Antonelli, as he reminisced about his 2007 rookie season after the Italian's incredible start to the 2026 campaign. Antonelli's Monaco Grand Prix triumph was his fifth consecutive victory, putting him 66 points above Hamilton at the top of the title race. It means Antonelli, like Hamilton, could be on to win the championship in just his second season of Formula One.
Hamilton in his breakthrough season took the fight to his established teammate Fernando Alonso to almost become champion in his rookie season, with the pair's ferocious inter-team rivalry, costing them in their fight with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen. After a tough first season, Antonelli, just like Hamilton against Alonso, has caught many by surprise with his performances against George Russell in his second campaign.
Hamilton admits Antonelli's rise has been a privilege to watch
Hamilton finished second behind Antonelli at the Monaco Grand Prix, catapulting himself ahead of Russell and teammate Charles Leclerc in the championship standings. The Brit will hope the close gap to Antonelli and the dominant Mercedes team at this weekend's Barcelona Grand Prix, but for now, Hamilton has admitted that it is a "privilege" to witness the teenager's success this season.
"He’s doing a phenomenal job. He’s got an amazing team around him with Bono, with Toto and the whole team. And I’m really happy to see them doing what they do best. And then for him in this moment to be delivering on the level that he’s delivering at, it’s awesome to see. It just encourages me to want to level up and I think encourages everybody wanting to level up.
"He’s only 19, so just imagine what the future holds for him. But I’m going to do my best to try and chase him down for the rest of the year. And as I said, just really, it’s a real privilege to witness it, be on the podium with two of the youngest guys here. Very much kind of remind me of me when I was back in 2007."
