A disgruntled Charles Leclerc said that he "struggled" in qualifying at the Miami Grand Prix, finishing the session in P3. Kimi Antonelli took pole position ahead of Max Verstappen in P2.
The Ferrari driver started off the weekend in South florida as the man to beat, topping an extended free practice session to highlight the Scuderia's imporved pace after a five-week hiatus.
However, a P3 finish in Saturday's Sprint Race could only be backed up by another third place in qualifying, and the performance was one that left Leclerc upset and searching for answers.
"I think we struggled quite a bit more today than we did yesterday in terms of pace and feeling with the car as well, so we’ve got to look at that," the 28-year-old stated to GPblog and others during Saturday's post-session press conference.

"It’s a little bit strange. Not much has changed on the car, but the feeling was not the same for sure. So, we’ll look into it. The wind is definitely a factor. I think the track temperature wasn’t that different, so I don’t think that is a reason.
"But the wind has for sure changed a little bit. Whether it will affect our car more than others, I don’t believe in that, so I think the answer is somewhere else. Maybe it is the track evolution and we didn’t anticipate that well, and maybe by just pushing a little bit more today in qualifying the weaknesses of the car were a little bit more apparent."

Leclerc surprised at Verstappen and Red Bull

Despite dominating the only free practice session of the weekend on Friday, Leclerc could not keep hold of that top spot.

Another impressive session from Antonelli showed that Mercedes is still the benchmark in 2026, but a fantastic step forward from Red Bull has buoyed Verstappen and shows the Austrian team cannot be ignored either.
When asked whether he was surprised to see both drivers ahead of him at the end of qualifying, Leclerc explained that the improved Red Bull did come as a bit of a shock to him.

"I don’t think it’s a surprise for Kimi because they’ve been the fastest car since the beginning of the year and Kimi has done an incredible job in the last three races," continued the Ferrari driver.
"Max and Red Bull is a bit more of a surprise, but they brought a significant upgrade, and they are a great team. They’ve shown it over the past years, so it’s not that we can rely on them staying where they were for the first three races.

"We expected a reaction, but it’s a very impressive reaction to be back on the front row after being so far off in the first races. It’s special. But yeah, our job is to do just the same and to finish in front of those guys. So that’s where my focus is at the moment."
