Flavio Briatore says he would be happy to work with both Toto Wolff and Christian Horner to help boost his struggling Alpine team, but highlighted that the question of Otro Capital selling its shares belongs to the Renault Group, not to him. Wolff and Mercedes recently pulled out of a deal with Otro Capital
to purchase 24% of the Alpine F1 Team and when asked about the matter, Briatore explained that the Austrian CEO and Mercedes team principal had been fair throughout the process.
Speaking at the Monaco
F1 GP, Briatore said:
"In one way, Otro Capital has nothing to do with the team. Otro Capital purchased 24% of the team two years ago. And in the moment they went to sell, like everybody knows, they were negotiating with Toto Wolff. Three days ago, the agreement fell. All the negotiations, we see what happened. But really, nothing to do with the team. We don't have any pressure from Renault Group regarding Otro Capital. This is really the problem of the Renault Group, it's not the problem of the Alpine team.He then continued with explaining why Wolff and Mercedes pulled out of the deal. "It’s very easy, the price was too high. At one point the guy brought up a different price and I think Toto was very fair, I believe. I do think the Otro Capital people are also fair, but Toto in all the negotiations was very fair."
Briatore would be happy to work with Horner
Horner was also among the people
interested in purchasing Otro Capital's shares. Briatore would welcome the ex-Red Bull Racing team principal on board with open arms, and highlighted that they have a positive relationship.
"We have a lot of negotiations with different people, including, at the time, Christian. For me, whatever solution is found by Renault, I'm very happy to accept whatever solution is. But whoever buys the share from Otro Capital needs to have the bless of Renault. I see it very difficult for somebody to spend 600 million to buy a minority in one company if it's not agreed with the majority. I don't understand the political side of Otro, honestly, because in this moment it's not going to work.
"I'd be happy to work with anybody. I'm not sure this is the point. I think the point at this moment is, I don't know, If Christian is involved in some group who want to buy Otro's share or not, for me, he's welcome to. I have zero problems, especially with Christian. I have a super relationship with Christian. I know him for 20 years and we're working together in the engine. I supplied the engine to him at the time with Renault, and we were working together for five years. I have zero problems. But this is only a question for Renault Group. You need to talk to Renault Group, to be honest," he concluded.
