Leonardo Fornaroli has provisionally won the 2025 Formula 2 title at the Qatar Grand Prix after finishing second in place during the feature race. However, there is an investigation pending. After the Italian's closest rival Jak Crawford failed to score points during the feature race in Qatar, Fornaroli was crowned champion on track. The youngster follows the footsteps of Gabriel Bortoleto, as he won the F3 title the previous season, and now tops F2 with Invicta Racing.
However, if Arvid Lindblad gets a time penalty by the stewards, Richard Verschoor would gain a position, which means he would mathematically still be able to win the title. If that's the case, Fornaroli will have to score a single point in Abu Dhabi.
Victor Martins won today's feature race in Qatar, and Alexander Dunne completed the podium.
As it happened
The feature race began after a ten minute delay at the
Losail International Circuit.
Martins got off to a better start than championship leader Fornaroli, and took the lead from second place on the grid. Rodin driver Dunne also gained a position after the start, and got up to fourth place.
The first stops were already completed on Lap 7, as Fornaroli and Dunne both entered the pit lane. The Irishman later received a five-second penalty for an unsafe release, similarly to Nikola Tsolov.
From the front, Martins, Oliver Goether and Roman Stanek all pitted a lap later. The Frenchman could stay ahead of his Italian rival after his stop.
The lead went to Dino Beganovic, who began setting fast laps on the hard tyres doing an alternative strategy.
On Lap 15, Goethe's car stopped in Sector 2, and as a result, the safety car was deployed, hurting the chances of every driver that started on the hard tyres. Despite having half the race left to go, Red Bull talent Arvid Lindblad stopped to fit the soft tyres.
Beganovic did well to stay in the lead after the restart, while Martins could also stay ahead of Fornaroli.
On Lap 27, Dunne pulled off a great move on Lindblad on the start-finish straight, even as the British talent left him close to no room on the inside.
After continuing to expand his gap at the front, Beganovic did his mandatory stop on Lap 27, and returned to the track in P12. After all the drivers on the hard tyres completed their stops, Martins reclaimed the lead, and won the race ahead of Fornaroli and Dunne.
