Kimi Antonelli capitalises on his teammate’s costly retirement to open up a decisive gap in the championship: here is the updated drivers’ standings after the Canadian Grand Prix. Russell loses crucial points as Antonelli capitalises
The Canadian Grand Prix delivered an explosive intra-team showdown between the two Mercedes drivers, with
George Russell and Kimi Antonelli battling fiercely for the lead throughout the opening stages of the race. After initially losing out to his teammate, Russell fought back aggressively and reclaimed the position on lap six with a move down the back straight, forcing Antonelli into a heavy lock-up as the Italian narrowly avoided contact under braking.
The fight between the pair remained intense for several laps, with Antonelli repeatedly trying to find a way back through while Russell defended firmly. The breakthrough eventually came on lap 22, when the Italian finally managed to retake the lead before beginning to edge away slightly. However, the momentum swung once again only a few laps later after Antonelli made an error at the final chicane, allowing Russell back past before being instructed by Peter Bonnington to hand the position back after gaining an advantage off-track.
The race then took a dramatic turn on lap 30, when Russell suddenly slowed with a technical issue and
was forced to retire his Mercedes W17. The Brit parked the car trackside in frustration, triggering a Virtual Safety Car and bringing an abrupt end to what had been a spectacular fight between the two teammates.
Russell’s retirement proved hugely significant for the championship, with Antonelli inheriting the lead and stretching his advantage over the Brit to 43 points in the standings. From that moment onwards, the race became far calmer at the front, allowing Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen to secure the remaining podium positions behind the Mercedes youngster.
