Incredible twist in the Canadian Grand Prix: George Russell suffers a reliability issue on his Mercedes W17 and is forced to retire on lap 30.
The British driver was forced to park his car due to a technical issue that has yet to be identified, with Kimi Antonelli reclaiming the lead after an incredibly intense battle with his teammate and now finding himself 43 points clear of Russell in the standings.
After climbing out of the car, the Brit showed his frustration over the incident, with the stranded Mercedes prompting the deployment of the Virtual Safety Car before racing resumed a few laps later.
Before Russell’s retirement, the two Mercedes drivers had once again been locked in a fierce battle for the lead. Antonelli spent several laps pressuring his teammate before finally making the move stick on lap 22, immediately opening up a small gap after taking over P1.
The momentum quickly swung back in Russell’s favour, however. A mistake from Antonelli a few laps later saw the Italian run deep through the chicane, allowing Russell to reclaim the position, with Peter Bonnington later instructing Antonelli to give the place back after gaining an advantage off track.
