Here’s how the British press reacted to McLaren’s double disqualification from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Lando Norris looked to be on the verge of putting one hand on his first world title after finishing second in the race, especially with his teammate once again nowhere near the podium.
Instead, the championship has been thrown wide open — all because of less than a millimetre, a fatal outcome for the British team and, above all, for the championship leader.
That tiny margin was enough for the stewards to come down hard and disqualify both Norris and Piastri, mirroring what happened to the two Ferrari drivers back in China.
BBC
The BBC points out that, despite the hefty points loss caused by the disqualification, the title fight is still very much in Norris’s hands — but also that, with such a slim margin, he now has to treat Verstappen as a more serious threat than ever.
“To close on Norris by 12 points on average over the remaining two races is still a big ask, but it's not that long since Verstappen's victory in Austin last month meant he had reduced his deficit to the championship leader — at that time Piastri — by 64 points over four races.
“The title is still Norris' to lose — and he can win it in Qatar this coming weekend, although the maths are complicated by the fact that there is a sprint race as well as a grand prix, but if Norris gains just two points over both rivals over the course of the Qatar weekend, he will be world champion next Sunday. If he fails to do that, the title fight goes to the final race in Abu Dhabi the following weekend.”
The Guardian
The Guardian highlights how, thanks to McLaren’s unexpected gift, Verstappen is now a serious title contender, able to put immense pressure on Norris and Piastri right through to the end, with nothing to lose himself.
“For Verstappen this is the sniff of a shot he has craved and he can be expected to pile on the pressure at the final two rounds. In the dry race conditions the Red Bull performed far better than in the wet in qualifying and Verstappen was all but flawless as he bossed the race on the street circuit in Nevada, perhaps making it the least invigorating of the three meetings the circuit has held.
“The win was another statement of intent from Verstappen and Red Bull that he will keep fighting to the very last in this championship and his late-season surge has been hugely impressive.”
Daily Mail
The Daily Mail also points out that all the pressure will now be on Norris following the disqualification, noting that the race result would have put him in a much stronger position heading into the championship finale.
“The verdict opened the door on the barely believable. Verstappen is now seriously in the hunt for a fifth consecutive world championship. The dynamic of the whole season has been turned on its head, and was McLaren's expulsion not a result of taking their car to beyond the limit because they felt a need to push the boundaries?
“Norris will be nervous now, surely, the biggest of all Dutch beasts in his mirrors and, to mix metaphors, knocking at the door of his dreams.”

Fans, like the press, didn’t miss the chance to voice their opinions on news that has shaken up the title fight, with three drivers now separated by just twenty-four points — and, above all, momentum firmly on Verstappen’s side.
