Valtteri Bottas has ruled himself out of any driver market speculation, insisting he will play no part in the usual silly season that unfolds ahead of the summer break. Ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, speculation emerged suggesting Bottas' place at
Cadillac could be under threat. At the time,
the Finn dismissed the rumours as a normal part of
Formula 1, describing them as completely unfounded while stressing that both he and the team were fully aware of his situation and remained completely aligned, with the outfit continuing to give him its full backing.
"It's part of the sport. It's not the first time I faced those kind of rumours, but it's a bit of a shame that somebody just makes up complete bullshit. But that's normal in this sport. And I know my situation, the team knows my situation, they support me 100 percent. So that's why, from my side, it was okay in the end."
Speaking to GPBlog at Spa, Bottas reiterated speculation is simply part of Formula 1, explaining that inaccurate headlines are inevitable and can spread extremely quickly through social media, even when they are completely untrue: “It's part of the sport. Sometimes there are some headlines that are not true, you know, that's just how it goes. And then, especially now with the social media, then people pick it up pretty quickly, things can go viral quite quickly.”
The Finn added that he has never been worried by the rumours because he knows his own situation and the team immediately reassured him that the reports were false. He also stressed that dealing with this kind of speculation is something every Formula 1 driver experiences at some stage of their career, insisting there is no silly season surrounding his future.
“The main thing is I know my situation and the team. Immediately when we saw the rumors, the team came to me that these are completely false. And I also know what my situation is. So that's why it's fine. And it's nothing new in my career. And for every driver at some point of their career, they're going to go through things like this. So no silly season for me.”
So far this season, Bottas remains one of four drivers yet to score a point, alongside teammate Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll and Nico Hulkenberg, as Cadillac continues to edge closer to the midfield by introducing a steady stream of upgrades aimed at improving the car's performance as quickly as possible during its debut Formula 1 campaign.
