With the Sprint taking place just hours before qualifying,
Stake F1 team's mechanics worked hard to turn Bortoleto's car around in time. Unfortunately for the home favourite, the damage was too much and he had to sit out qualifying.
Speaking to F1TV Bortoleto said: "I'm feeling okay. I mean obviously disappointed because I didn't make it to qualifying in my first home Grand Prix.
That's a shame because I generally thought that the car was very competitive this weekend but still a race to do tomorrow.
“Obviously disappointed about the crash but yeah that's it.”
Hopes for Sunday redemption
Bortoleto lost control when he hit a wet patch of the track as he attempted to overtake Alex Albon.
Debris was scattered all across the circuit, with a large piece of the Sauber's front wing even lodging itself under Albon's Williams.
