Andrea Kimi Antonelli showed great one lap pace in Miami. In race trim, however, it was not as promising. After the Miami Grand Prix, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff spoke about his perspective on his rookie driver.
How would Wolff assess Antonelli's Miami race weekend then? After all the young Italian did become the youngest pole sitter ever with his Sprint pole on Friday.

Wolff enthused by Antonelli's one lap pace, but improvements needed in race trim

"I think the high point, definitely seeing his speed on a single lap, great. That's another proof of his talent and a good indication to how the future can be," said the Austrian to media including GPblog after the race.
His performances in the race, though, indicate there's still work to be done. "In the race, [it was] challenging because it's so difficult here to find a reference. You can say it was the medium stint, quick enough, with George holding on in the back, on the hard tyre? [It was] not good. And then when he went onto the hards, he just lacks experience managing it the right way."
Bottom line, Wolff is satisfied with his fast Italian rookie's performance in Miami. "Bono really tried to guide him, but when he's in the car, it's not easy. And I think it's just part of the learning curve. There's nothing that is disappointing. Overall, I go away with the feeling that he's done a good job."
Despite starting P3, Antonelli couldn't hold on to his teammate, George Russell who qualified P5 for Sunday's race. Whilst the Briton finished on the podium, the Italian youngster was powerless to defend his position from Alexander Albon's quick Williams.
It must be said, that Russell's podium result was helped greatly by a timely VSC, without which a top 3 result would have been out of the question.
