Heading into the Monaco Grand Prix with a comfortable lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship standings, Kimi Antonelli has now taken a bigger look to assess his chances of winning his maiden Formula 1 world title. The 19-year-old
Mercedes driver, who claimed his first
F1 victory at the Chinese Grand Prix earlier this season, has shown no signs of slowing down since. Antonelli followed up his breakthrough success in Shanghai with three consecutive race wins, extending his remarkable run to four victories in succession.
That impressive streak has propelled the Italian to the top of the championship standings, where he now holds a 43-point advantage over teammate and pre-season title favourite
George Russell. Despite his commanding position,
Antonelli has largely remained level-headed about the prospect of winning his maiden F1 title. However, in the aftermath of his receipt of the Bandini Trophy in Brisighella, the Bologna native has opened up on the possibility of winning the Drivers’ Championship.

Speaking to Sky Italia, Antonelli admitted to knowing he holds the prospect of clinching the title, but he doesn’t want to lose his head about it. “I know I can win,” he said. “But I don't want to think about it and lose my head.”
The Mercedes driver continued by noting how he has so far continued to do his driving without thinking about the championship, particularly considering how long the campaign is.
“Drive races while thinking about the championship. The season is still so long. I'll continue driving as if I have nothing to lose. Because I can't lose anything I haven't achieved yet,” he added.
Antonelli wants to avoid friction with Russell
Amid his championship lead, Antonelli is also keen to avoid a sour relationship with teammate Russell. The pair were involved in some hard racing last time out at the Canadian Grand Prix, with
Antonelli taking to the team radio to flag what he regarded as unfair racing from the Brit and subsequently calling for a penalty for Russell.
The incident took Mercedes team boss
Toto Wolff’s intervention to calm the hot-headed Antonelli after he went on and on over team radio.
However, reflecting on the incident and particularly his relationship with Russell, Antonelli noted how, despite the pair having their ambition of a Drivers’ title set before them, they will want to avoid upsetting Wolff, stressing the team still takes priority over the drivers.
“We are both in an excellent position, we both have a great car, and we both want to win. During the races, we naturally want to treat each other fairly, we don't want to cause chaos in the team, and of course, we don't want to upset Toto. When we race, of course, we race to win. We want to be the best and sure, we race for ourselves - but also for the team,” he concluded.
Domenicali responds to growing hype over Antonelli’s rise in F1
Antonelli’s surge to the top of Formula 1 in 2026 continues to make waves, and Formula 1 CEO
Stefano Domenicali was recently quizzed about the possibility of the young Italian developing in the coming years into the face of the sport.
Speaking on the Seven Lives podcast hosted by Italian media personality Hoara Borselli, Domenicali was asked whether Antonelli could emerge as the new face of Formula 1. The 61-year-old motorsport chief moved quickly to temper expectations, while still acknowledging the scale of the youngster’s early achievements.
“Kimi Antonelli is an extraordinary talent. He’s still a very natural character and doesn’t yet have that, how can I put it, that ‘superstructure’ that comes with years of living in this environment, where from one day to the next you become a hero,” Domenicali said.
