The second free practice session was halted halfway through by
Pierre Gasly's AlphaTauri, which was on fire. It was quite a fire and caused a lot of damage. Not only on the engine but also on the chassis.
AlphaTauri's mechanics therefore had to break the curfew to replace Gasly's chassis. According to the regulations, teams are allowed to do this at most twice a year and because the team still had one of these 'jokers' left, they will not be punished for this.
Cause of fire has already been discovered
The fire at the rear engine of Gasly's car started, according to
Honda, due to a power failure. How the car subsequently caught fire so quickly is still to be investigated.
AlphaTauri was not the only team to replace a chassis last night.
Williams did the same for
Nicholas Latifi and they will not be penalised for this either.
