Fernando Alonso has deemed the coming few months crucial for the team, as it will determine the ambition the team can have for the rest of the season.
The Spaniard had a nice start of the 2018-season, finishing fifth after starting tenth in Melbourne, and will be hoping to continue his fine form in the Bahrain desert. Several updates were installed during the two-week break between the first and second race of the season, and McLaren has said to have more upgrades in the works for the coming weeks.
"There's still a considerable gap between us and the leaders, but it's up to us to do something about it," Alonso said on McLaren's ambitions.
"It's up to the team to really deliver these next four, five, six weeks, so we can close the gap a bit to pole position and podium finishes.
"Then it's up to me and Stoffel to deliver on the weekends."
Alonso, ever the optimist, hasn't been able to compete much over the last three years, as the Honda McLaren struggled for relevance (and to stay on the track), something that frustrated the two-time champion Alonso to the point where he almost retired from the sport last year.
