Fernando Alonso is content with his performances on Friday as the Spaniard finished with the ninth time, but he warns that the McLaren cars need to be perfect for them to reach Q3 on Saturday.
Alonso beat his teammate Stoffel Vandoorne by a tenth to finish ninth with a 1:31.282, but both McLaren cars managed to finish in the top ten, which is a promising sign.
The team had several new upgraded parts installed since two weekends ago in Melbourne, which should help the MCL33 progress further up the grid.
“Today was a case of so far, so good,” Alonso said after Friday night's session was over.
“The weekend has started in a positive way and there’s nothing in particular to worry about.
“Our aim for qualifying is to be in Q3 – a target we missed in Australia – and we need to deliver and do a perfect lap so that we can beat some of the cars in front of us.
Alonso thinks that he and his Belgian teammate can squeeze a little bit more of performance out of their cars than they did today, and the two-time champion will be hoping to build on his impressive fifth place at the Australian Grand Prix.
