Earlier this season, it was revealed that Adrian Newey has shifted his focus entirely towards 2026 at Aston Martin. Fernando Alonso has also revealed in a conversation with DAZN how far this focus extends.
After moving from Red Bull after 2024, Newey moved to Aston Martin and is now the man tasked with building the British team's first championship-winning car.
For years, the team has been assembling a squad capable of competing for the world title, with the master designer having 12 constructors' titles and 13 drivers' championships to his name thanks to his work.
It soon became known that Newey would primarily focus on next season's car after starting on March 1, 2025. Besides new engine regulations, there will also be changes to the car itself. With Red Bull, the top executive and his team managed to build a car that won 38 races in the first two years after the introduction of new rules.
Fernando Alonso and Adrian Newey will be working together at Aston Martin and looking to bring the British team to the front of the grid in 2026.
How far Newey's focus on 2026 goes according to Alonso
Newey's focus is so intense on next season that there has been point point-blank refusal surrounding discussions about Aston Martin's 2025 car, revealed Alonso:
“Every time we ask something about this year or how to improve something, he gets up and goes to another office. So he’s already in 2026 mode.”
What's also interesting is the fact that Aston Martin is switching to Honda as their engine supplier. In 2021, Max Verstappen won the championship with a Honda engine, while the Japanese manufacturer remained involved with the Red Bull Powertrains project from 2022 through the end of the current season.
In 2022 and 2023, Red Bull won both the drivers' and constructors' championships, while in 2024, they only secured the drivers' title.
