When the news came out that Sauber might be taken over by Andretti Autosport Colton Herta was mentioned as well. The IndyCar-driver could quite easily make the switch to Formula 1 at that moment, since he has a contract with Andretti. Herta says at RACER.com that he was free to make a choice.

After the United States Grand Prix it was reported that the deal was cancelled and so Herta's chances in Formula 1 were suddenly over. The 21-year-old driver says he was never really sure he was going to make that switch anyway.

"It was going to be my decision if I wanted to go or if I wanted to stay. But it takes a lot to drag me away from IndyCar, too, because it’s what I grew up [with]. I didn’t grow up watching Formula 1. In fact, I didn’t really start following Formula 1 until maybe I was 12 or 13, where I watched IndyCar from the time I could remember. It was gonna take a lot for me to get dragged away to Europe," said the IndyCar driver.

Something for the future

Herta will not be Valtteri Bottas ' teammate next year, but we may see him on the Formula 1 grid in the future. At the moment he is very happy with how well things are going in IndyCar. "There’s a lot of different stuff in racing that I want to do. But IndyCar, that’s what gave me my love for racing. And yeah, it’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from it at this point with the situation I’m in, able to gun for a championship, able to win races."
