Ferrari want to forget the dramatic 2020 season in 2021. It was mainly the Italians' powerplant that caused them to score so poorly in 2020. Team boss Mattia Binotto says the first steps have been taken and there will be another new engine for next year.

"Definitely the power unit has improved, and happy to see as well that [Alfa Romeo] and Haas progressed," Binotto told Formula1.com. "I think from our side, we progressed in all the areas that were possible."

Ferrari wants to get back to the top of the field as soon as possible, but Binotto accepts that won't be so easy. Therefore, there will be a completely new engine in the Ferrari in 2022. This will go hand in hand with the new aerodynamic rules that will come into effect next season.

Backlog already reduced considerably

"I would say that we are lacking in all the areas. I think we are still lacking on the engine, less than before certainly so the gap has closed and I think we are converging," said Binotto. However, the gap has narrowed significantly. Where the fastest Ferrari was 1.9 seconds slower than the pole position time in Bahrain in 2020, it was only 0.6 seconds in 2021.

"Hopefully by next year, when we will again have a new power unit, we may catch up or have a benchmark for the others," Binotto concludes.
