After Red Bull Racing looked in control during the Grand Prix weekend, it was Mercedes who came out on top with Lewis Hamilton taking the race win, and Valtteri Bottas taking third place with the fastest lap. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff breathed a sigh of relief after.

Early pit stop

Mercedes opted to pit Hamilton early and hoped to produce an undercut. Hamilton got into the lead, but after subsequent pitstops, the British driver had ten-lap older tyres. Wolff reacts to the drama.

"I think it was a great battle of strategies. The pace, at the beginning Max had it under control. And we took a bold move pitting so early and gained a position. Then we thought we are doing the same to prevent against the undercut," Wolff told Sky Sports.

Fantastic end

After chasing Hamilton hard during the closing chapter, Verstappen actually got ahead of the seven-time world champion. But because he ran wide during the overtake, the Dutchman had to give the place back. Wolff says the track limits won Mercedes the race.

"He had a tiny mistake and had to give back the position. We were suddenly told in the race that track limits were imposed and that won us the race today. For the first race, I see these guys are a tiny bit ahead of us."
