Ferrari has not had its best years in Formula 1 with 2020 as the low point. An engine that may or may not be illegal had to be modified. This caused the Italians to fall back far behind. Nevertheless they look positive to the future.

Mattia Binotto spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport about the strategic choices that need to be made due to the introduction of the budget cap. "The moment when the focus will be on the design of the car for next year will be earlier than usual this year. This is not only because of the budget ceiling but also because we will have a completely new car in 2022, not to mention that the financial constraints are even tighter in 2023."

According to Binotto, this requires the necessary adjustments. "We have to change our approach, especially in terms of the use of resources and spending. We will have to be more efficient: know how to prioritise and spend appropriately. Those things will become even more important."

Distances are getting smaller

Furthermore, the well-known Italian sports newspaper asks whether customer teams will beat the big manufacturers due to the arrival of the budget ceiling. "We saw that a few times last year, with the successes of Sergio Perez and Pierre Gasly. In the long term, I think the bigger teams will continue to fight for the title, even though the distances will become smaller," Binotto said.
