Kevin Magnussen has defended Sebastian Vettel over his overtake on Max Verstappen during qualifying saying the Ferrari man "did the right thing."

Verstappen was overtaken by Vettel and then both Renault drivers as the field bunched up vying for a clean run to the line.

The Red Bull driver made his feelings known after the session, saying he would ruin Vettel's lap in the future after he perceived the four-time champion as breaking a gentleman's agreement and overtaking him ahead of a qualifying run.

“In the end, if they got the lap, then they did the right thing,” Magnussen explained to Motorsport.com.

“It was pretty messy so at the end of the lap everyone was trying to, I guess, get started, but also have somebody in front.

“So it ended up being too much and costs a few guys the lap. Everyone also went out at exactly the same time out of the pits.

“We were following each other and towards the end of the lap you didn’t know whether to try and overtake people, which in that case they are going to defend and it was messy.”
