Antonelli Hits the Wall, Russell Takes Pole: Azerbaijan GP Qualifying Delivers a Shock

Russell had looked quick throughout the weekend, topping both Thursday practice sessions before setting the pace in Q1 and Q2. But the final shootout was no formality. Oscar Piastri briefly put his McLaren at the top of the timesheets in Q3, only for Russell to respond with a significantly quicker lap. On a circuit where the walls punish even small mistakes, the Mercedes driver delivered when the pressure was highest.

For Antonelli, qualifying unravelled much earlier. The Italian struck the barrier at Turn 1 during Q1, damaging the front-left corner of his Mercedes. He had already set a time good enough to progress, but the car could not continue.

Antonelli took no part in Q2 and was classified 16th in qualifying. It was a costly mistake for a driver who arrived in Baku with an 81-point lead over Russell in the championship.

The contrast between the Mercedes drivers could hardly be sharper. Russell has put himself at the front for Saturday’s race, while Antonelli faces a recovery drive through traffic and gives Russell an opportunity to cut into his team-mate’s advantage if he can turn pole into a strong race result.

Beyond the Mercedes story, Alpine emerged as one of qualifying’s biggest talking points. Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto both reached Q3, giving the team two cars in the top-ten shootout. Colapinto secured the final place in Q3 with a late Q2 improvement, while Gasly had already shown promising pace during practice. Their result gives Alpine two chances to fight near the front of the midfield when the lights go out.

Carlos Sainz also made the top 10 for Williams. His Q3 appearance stood out alongside the Alpine pair’s progress, particularly after Williams team-mate Alex Albon was eliminated in Q2.

Sainz’s lap ensured Williams had a place in the final qualifying segment despite an intensely competitive fight for the last few spots.

It was an otherwise disappointing result for Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren. Piastri’s brief spell at the top showed that the fight was not settled by Mercedes’ strong practice form.
