Antonelli Left Frustrated After Baku Barrier Hit as Russell Takes Pole in 'League of His Own'

The Mercedes driver clipped the barrier on the inside of Turn 1 during Q1. While he initially attempted to nurse the car back to the pit lane, race engineer Peter Bonnington instructed him to pull over, as the front-left suspension damage was far too severe to repair in time for Q2.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the session, the Italian admitted he was caught off guard by the rapid track evolution in Baku.

The incident compounded a frustrating weekend for Antonelli, who had already missed significant running across Thursday practice due to a persistent hydraulic problem.

The setback proved all the more jarring given the outright performance of the Mercedes package, highlighted by team-mate George Russell storming to pole position by eight tenths of a second.

“The car has been very strong this weekend, so George has been doing incredibly well,” Antonelli added. “We’ll try our best tomorrow to recover as many places as possible.”

The error did not escape scrutiny from 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, who delivered a characteristically blunt verdict on the incident while reviewing the session for Sky Sports F1.

"It's not an inch, it's a lot. An incredible mistake and he does it on a weekend where his team-mate is in a league of his own," Villeneuve remarked. "So, not the best of time for that, but with the current rules they facilitate getting back through the field."

Starting from the eighth row on the streets of Baku represents one of Antonelli’s stiffest challenges of the season so far. With Russell starting at the head of the field with a clear path into Turn 1, Antonelli's 81-point championship cushion will be put under genuine pressure.

Baku, however, is a venue renowned for Safety Cars, long slipstreams, and high attrition. If Antonelli can maintain his composure and capitalise on the car's demonstrable pace, he retains a fighting chance to salvage a points haul on race day.
