‘Ferrari is the dream’ - Horner breaks silence on sensational switch to reignite Wolff feud

The fierce rivalry between Horner and Wolff defined an entire era of modern Formula 1, peaking in the bitter and historic title battle of 2021 before Horner’s eventual exit from the sport. Now watching from the sidelines, Horner believes Wolff is enjoying far too quiet an existence without him on the pit wall. Outlining his lingering hunger to step back inside the ring, Horner pulled no punches about why he wants back in, in an interview with The Times.

For Horner, who is locked in a seven way fight for a slice of Alpine, a peaceful life away from the high-stress environment of Formula 1 has clearly proven insufficient. While he remains comfortable in his life away from the paddock, the competitive fire refuses to diminish.

Horner is acutely aware that his reappearance on the grid would instantly destabilise Wolff and shatter the current status quo. Reflecting on Mercedes' current environment, Horner delivered a warning shot directly to Brackley: “He’s having it easy while I’m not there. So why would he want me back? I’m probably going to give him a harder time than anybody else.”

If Horner is to engineer a sensational comeback to renew hostilities with Wolff, all roads appear to lead toward Maranello - although not all are convinced he can turn the team around.

Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur is now under pressure while the team remains the ultimate aspiration in motorsport, and Horner made no attempt to disguise his admiration for the legendary Italian outfit, identifying them as the sole team on the grid capable of tempting him back into the trenches as a non-owner.

“I’ve been a hired hand. I did 21 years sitting on the pit wall. I don’t need to go back to that. At this stage in my life, there’s only one team for which I would accept non-participation in ownership,” Horner revealed. When pressed specifically on whether he would take the reins at Maranello, his response was unequivocal: “Would I consider Ferrari? I mean, Ferrari is the biggest brand in Formula 1. It’s the dream. And arguably it’s the sleeping giant of Formula 1. I think the fact that, 14 months out of the sport, they’re still talking about me shows that there’s still a demand. Perhaps I wasn’t that unpopular.”

Horner even joked about how his trademark look would suit the Scuderia's iconic styling, joking that: “Yeah, I would just blend into the uniform.”

Despite the growing noise, questions linger regarding how quickly an agreement could come together. Asked whether he could already be back on the Formula 1 grid next year, Horner admitted the answer is complicated: “I don’t know. I’m the cure and the problem.”

Horner is adamant that any prospective comeback must be about raw performance rather than personal pride. “There comes a point in time where a team’s competitiveness outweighs other egotistical stuff.” Should Ferrari provide the package, Wolff may soon discover that his easiest days in the paddock are officially numbered.
