Sebastian Vettel has explained that the pit stops were the crucial factor in his win at Spa Francorchamps, as the very quick change of tyres gave him the opportunity to get out of the pit lane in front of Lewis Hamilton.

The German was simply the best today, with him pulling away from Hamilton massively, particularly in the last stint of the race. Mercedes simply couldn't keep up with Vettel's pace, and eventually stopped pushing to catch him, in case anything would happen to the car.

"It was very close in the first stint, with only a couple of seconds between us, but a great pit stop so there was no chance... it felt so quick... it was very crucial," Vettel explained at the press conference to Sky Sports among others.

"Then in the second stint we could control it a little bit more.

"I don't think the car was there right from the beginning, but we've got it to the point where it works everywhere and now we're competitive.

"I hope it helps boost the race at Monza and for it to stay on the calendar for a long time, as I've heard some rumours.

"Looking forward to going to Italy as obviously I spend some time there, but racing in Italy is special for us.

"It should be a lot of fun."
