Home favourite Maximo Quiles won the Moto3 race at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez. However, a Spanish double did not materialise, as Manuel Gonzalez finished second behind his teammate Senna Agius in Moto2. Moto2
After claiming his first pole position, Collin Veijer lost the lead into the first corner to Gonzalez, but the Dutchman reclaimed it a couple of corners later. A lap later, Agius also made a move on his teammate Gonzalez.
The top three pulled away from the rest of the pack, with the two Intact GP riders continuously putting Veijer under pressure. The Dutchman managed to hold the lead until lap 15, when Agius and Gonzalez both overtook him.
During the final five laps, the three riders remained closely together, but Gonzalez could not make a move stick against the 20-year-old Australian. Veijer completed the top three. Showing strong pace in the second half of the race, David Alonso nearly joined the leading group. The Colombian prodigy finished fourth. As a result, Gonzalez leads ahead of his teammate by 9.5 points
in the riders' standings.
Moto3
After a start without major incidents in Jerez, Maximo Quiles led the pack in the opening laps. However, at the first corner, Adrian Fernandez pushed Matteo Bertelle off the track, unfortunately ending the Italian’s race.
The front three of Quiles, Fernandez and David Muñoz pulled away from the rest. On Lap 7, the Leopard Racing rider made a move for the lead in the final corner, taking it from the championship leader coming into this round.
Quiles reclaimed the lead on Lap 15, and a couple of laps later, Muñoz also made a move on Fernandez. Marco Morelli also began to close the gap to the leading three riders.
Quiles was able to pull clear during the final laps, while his teammate Morelli closed in to battle the other two riders for the podium. After a hard-fought fight during the final lap, Fernandez finished second ahead of Muñoz and Morelli, with the result decided by a photo finish between the three.
