After recent rumours that the legendary Phillip Island Circuit in Australia could be converted into a golf course in future, the circuit's owner Andrew Fox has spoken publicly to denounce the claims and assure the racing community that the iconic track will not be sold or demolished.
Earlier in the week,
GP Blog reported on the open letter published by Bob Barnard, the circuit designer for Phillip Island among other legendary venues, which claimed there was a possibility of the iconic track being converted in a golf course one day.
The circuit is one of the most beloved locations on the entire MotoGP calendar and is considered the crowning jewel of the championship by the majority of fans and riders alike. However, that doesn't matter to Liberty Media, whose first action since assuming majority control of the sport at the start of the year was to axe it from the calendar in favour of a yet-to-be-built Adelaide street circuit.

The Phillip Island Circuit isn't going anywhere
Following that, it was also announced that the track would be removed from the WSBK calendar, leaving the Island without its two premier motorsport events of the year and with a highly uncertain future.
Now, the Fox family have denied the claims that the area could be turned into a golf course:
“The track is definitely not for sale, and we have no interest in building a golf course on our land at Phillip Island," said Fox, "Nor is it on the market. It never has been. The land will definitely remain a racetrack. mLet me make that very, very clear on behalf of the Fox family."
“In relation to talk of a golf course, the last time that was proposed [on land adjacent to the track], the council voted against it. So why would the Fox family waste their time again, especially at the expense of destroying the track?”
The news will be extremely welcome among MotoGP fans, particularly those in Australia, since it means there is still a very slim possibility of the circuit's return one day in the future - especially if the Adelaide experiment proves as disastrous
as many are predicting it to be.
