Ducati's Marc Marquez set the pace in FP1 at the Japanese Grand Prix ahead of his championship rivals Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi.
The first MotoGP session at Motegi began with the track still being slippery. Minutes into the session, Honda's Takaaki Nakagami was the first to crash at Turn 11, hitting his left shoulder. The Japanese rider fractured his collarbone and was declared unfit, Honda confirmed on social media.
Most riders began to enter the circuit towards the halfway point of the session. After the first set of laps was complete in Motegi, Bezzecchi set the pace ahead of last year's Grand Prix winner Francesco Bagnaia and his teammate Martin with a 1:45.007.
During the final 15 minutes, the riders further improved. In the end, Marc Marquez was the quickest, with the Spaniard topping Aprilia's Martin on his final lap, after the chequered flag had already been waved. The defending world champion improved to a 1:44.0.
