MotoGP confirms British Grand Prix future with new Silverstone deal

The British Grand Prix has gotten off to the perfect start with a major announcement from MotoGP.
The series has revealed a new deal with Silverstone to host the event just a day before bikes hit the track for Friday practice.
There were some doubts over its continuation with a deal that expired after 2026. However, the new agreement covers the 2027 and 2028 seasons.
MotoGP and Silverstone extend partnership through 2028
MotoGP’s CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta, said in a statement: "The UK has a rich motorcycle racing heritage and remains one of the most important markets for MotoGP.

“Since returning to Silverstone in 2010, we have built a strong partnership and together delivered some unforgettable British Grand Prix weekends.
"Silverstone provides a fantastic stage for MotoGP, eleven different winners in the last eleven Grands Prix hosted at the circuit is a testament to the quality, competitiveness and unpredictability of racing at the circuit.
"This extension gives us the opportunity to keep investing in the event, strengthen our presence in the UK and create even more value for our fans, teams, partners and promoters over the coming years."
Silverstone CEO Stuart Pringle added: "This extension underscores our commitment to two-wheel racing.
“It's not just about signing a contract; it's about reaffirming our vision. Silverstone has proven its capability to host the pinnacle of global motorsport - from MotoGP to Formula 1 and the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Silverstone's place on the calendar had been in doubt
Silverstone has hosted the British Grand Prix since 2010 when it took over from Donington Park.
There were murmurs that it could return to the Derby track, or be lost from the calendar going forward.
The agreement comes at a particularly sensitive time given the lack of British talent on the grid.
The 2026 season began with no British riders, but at Silverstone, three-time race winner Cal Crutchlow will be taking part in the sixth event where he’s subbed in at LCR Honda for the injured Johann Zarco.

British Grand Prix has endured difficult moments in recent years
Silverstone’s relationship with MotoGP was also damaged when tens of thousands of fans were also left seething in 2018 when they were sent home from the race.
Sharing the track with Formula 1, a major resurfacing led to appalling conditions when rain fell.
Tito Rabat suffered a broken leg in Saturday’s sessions among several incidents, and the start times were brought forward for Sunday due to the conditions.
Yet despite the scheduled 11:30am start, it wasn’t until 4pm that 125,000 soggy spectators were sent home without a bike hitting the track.
